At Shepherd & Schaller we’re all about family. The people and companies we partner with are our friends and family as we work to support you and yours.
Meet the Family: Outdoor Research, where they think that life gets better the minute you step out the door on a new adventure, no matter how big or small. We learn about ourselves, each other and the environment every time we get out. We come home a little wiser and stronger. We see the world more clearly, and that compels us to treat it better. More than anything, we’re convinced that if we inspire more people to get outside, the world will be a better place.
@Outdoor Research Core Beliefs:
A Culture of Respect: We listen, value and empower each other and our fellow adventures while striving to protect the planet we live on. Innovation That Works: Make it better, not just new or different. Improve Every Day: Sweat the details and strive to be better in everything we do. Beauty in Function: Create differentiation through clean, simple solutions. The Power of the Journey: Through challenges we grow, and have fun along the way.

Each week, we’ll be highlighting a few staff picks of our favorite gear around the store. After all, we don’t just sell great clothing and equipment here at Shep’s; we also buy our great clothing & gear and use it for our own outdoor adventures! This week, Sep wanted to share a few items he just can’t live without.
1. Patagonia Arbor Pack – This 26L is one of my favorite backpacks of all time. It’s cool retro styling combined with easy entry and a bulletproof build make it perfect for a day of hiking or a place to stash your books. Plus, because it doesn’t have any built in padding along the back, it’s easily packable and hugs my body like a glove when I’m out exploring the outdoors.
2. Chinook Superlight Mummy 45 Bag – I have the older version of this bag, and it’s been a champ for years. This one have been upgraded with Insufil 1 making it lighter and warmer than it’s predecessor, costs a mere $49, and is one of the best 45° lightweight bags I’ve ever used for any money. These are a true bargain in the camping / hiking world for sure!
3. Patagonia Wavefarer Engineered Board Shorts – I’m kind of a Patagonia junkie, and for good reason. As a company, they continue to push for environmental causes to keep our world clean and renewable. They haven’t lost sight of the fact that people buy their clothing to be used outdoors, in tough conditions, with the highest demand for performance. Their fit and quality is amazing, and pretty much everything they design looks great! I picked these board shorts up before a recent trip I took to Oregon with my wife, and I never wanted to take them off. These shorts are super comfortable and built to last for years.

You’re the one who knows your dad, but we’re taking a shot at figuring them all out. The below text & images represent three types of dads. Because Father’s Day is THIS WEEKEND, you might want to pinpoint where your dad fits in, read the gift idea list & make some mental notes. After that, stop by to pick up something awesome for him.
Dad type 1: The Playful
Your dad might always be up for a game of catch, running with the dog, or a round of disc golf. If he’s the type who loves to get out and have a good time, he might fit into this category.
Gift ideas include:
Relaxed, comfortable clothing by Kavu, The North Face, Kuhl, Patagonia, Dakine
Casual kick-around sneakers (Helly Hansen shoes pictured here)
Disc golf discs or carry bag
Portable disc golf catcher
Games – backgammon, cribbage, mancala, dominos
Dad type 2: The Outdoorsy
If dad stays out from dawn till dusk enjoying all that nature has to offer, he’s probably the outdoorsy type. Maybe he packs a bag and hikes, takes the kayak out, pedals the local bike trails. He just loves to be out and breathe in that fresh air.
Gift ideas include:
Dad type 3: The Adventurer
Is faster & more dangerous always better for dad? If he lives on the edge, you see it all over his face: he craves adventure. Feed his craving with some cool toys on Father’s Day.
Gift ideas include:
A bike. Yep, he probably wants new one.
A wakeboard, waterskis, wake surf, or wake skate from Hyperlite or HO
An HO neoprene vest or Accurate rope for behind the boat
Sun Bum sun protection (he’s going to need it)
Dad loved the handprint picture frames you gave him as a child (it’s probably sitting on his desk), but he’ll love quality gifts tailored to the things he loves to do. Show him how much you love him by making this Father’s Day something special.
